OUR PHILOSOPHY

IN TODAY’S WORLD, BEING BUSY IS CONSIDERED A VIRTUE AND EXHAUSTED, A BADGE OF HONOR. THIS “ALWAYS ON” LIFESTYLE PREDICTABLY GIVES RISE TO A HOST OF MALADIES — FROM STRESS AND ANXIETY TO CHRONIC PAIN. TO COPE, WE NUMB OUR SENSES AND SHORT-CIRCUIT OUR NATURAL CHEMISTRIES. THIS IS NOT THE WAY IT SHOULD BE. WE BELIEVE IT IS RIGHT TO FEEL GOOD. BUT FAST ANSWERS AND QUICK FIXES WON’T GET US THERE. TAKING CARE OF ONESELF IS A DAILY PRACTICE. IT MEANS TUNING IN TO THE RHYTHMS OF OUR OWN BODIES AS WELL AS THOSE OF THE WORLD AROUND US. IT MEANS BEING PRESENT IN THE MOMENT TO LAY A MORE HEALTHFUL FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE. OF COURSE, WE DO NOT TAKE CREDIT FOR THESE IDEAS. THEY ARE PRACTICALLY AS OLD AS TIME. YET THEY ARE POWERFUL AND TRUE.

THEY ARE THE NATURE OF THINGS.

ABOUT OUR NAME

“De Rerum Natura” (or “On the Nature of Things”)  is the title of a poem written by the ancient Roman poet Lucretius around 50 BC. It expounds on the tenets of Epicurean philosophy set forth by the Greek philosopher Epicurus, namely the belief that pleasure is the greatest good. Not hedonism, mind you. True pleasure, Epicurus explained, is modest in nature and earthbound in practice. It arises not from excess but lack — the lack of pain and the lack of fear. It is the state of balance, tranquility and total well-being. We chose our name to honor the teachings of Epicurus. In our current age, we believe them to be more relevant than ever.
